Elastómerum, commonly known as elastomers, are polymers with viscoelasticity, meaning they exhibit both viscosity and elasticity. These materials are capable of undergoing significant deformation under stress and then returning to their original shape once the stress is removed. Elastomers are widely used in various industries due to their unique properties, including flexibility, resilience, and resistance to abrasion and chemicals.

Elastomers can be classified into two main categories: thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs) and thermosetting elastomers. Thermoplastic elastomers are linear polymers that can be melted and reshaped multiple times without undergoing chemical changes. Examples include styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) and thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU). Thermosetting elastomers, on the other hand, undergo a chemical cross-linking process during their production, which makes them permanently set. Natural rubber and synthetic rubbers like polyisoprene and polychloroprene are common examples of thermosetting elastomers.

The properties of elastomers can be tailored by adjusting their chemical composition, molecular weight, and cross-linking density. Factors such as temperature, pressure, and exposure to chemicals can also influence their performance. Elastomers are valued for their ability to withstand repeated flexing and stretching, making them ideal for applications like seals, gaskets, tires, and vibration-dampening components.

In addition to their mechanical properties, elastomers offer excellent electrical insulation, weather resistance, and low-temperature flexibility. They are also used in medical devices, automotive parts, and consumer goods due to their biocompatibility and durability. Advances in polymer science continue to expand the range of elastomeric materials, enabling new applications and improved performance in existing ones.
