Export volume, or eksportvolum, is a statistic that measures the quantity of goods and services a country ships to foreign markets in a given period. It is typically expressed in physical units or in real terms that adjust for price changes, and it is distinct from export value, which records monetary revenue from exports.

Measurement and definition: Export volume can be reported as a quantity index (for example, tonnes or number of units) or as a price-deflated index with a base year. Real export volume is obtained by deflating export value with a suitable export price index, so that changes reflect quantities rather than price movements. A base-year value is usually set to 100.

Data sources and usage: National statistical offices and international organizations publish export volume data or provide methods to derive it from export value and prices. Analysts use eksportvolum to assess underlying trade demand, assess competitiveness, and contribute to GDP and terms of trade analyses. Movements in volume may diverge from value when prices fluctuate.

Limitations: Comparability across countries and time can be challenging due to different coverage (goods and services), treatment of re-exports, and revisions to deflators. Volume data may be unavailable for some categories or periods, requiring estimation.
