Ekspansjonsapparater, commonly referred to as expanders, are devices used in orthodontics to widen the dental arches. They are primarily employed to correct dental crowding, improve bite alignment, and create space for erupting teeth. The most frequent type of expander is the rapid palatal expander (RPE), which is surgically or mechanically activated to separate the midpalatal suture in the roof of the mouth. This separation encourages bone growth, leading to a gradual widening of the upper jaw.

Expansionsapparater are typically custom-made for each patient and are attached to the teeth with bands or acrylic. The activation process usually involves a key that the patient or their parent turns daily or every few days. This turning action applies gentle pressure, gradually widening the appliance and, consequently, the palate. The duration of treatment varies depending on the individual's needs and age, but active expansion typically lasts for a few weeks, followed by a retention period to allow new bone to form.

While RPEs are the most common, other types of expanders exist for different situations, such as surgically assisted rapid palatal expansion (SARPE) for adults whose midpalatal suture has fused, or slow palatal expanders for less significant arch discrepancies. Potential side effects can include temporary discomfort, pressure on the teeth, and changes in speech. Regular monitoring by an orthodontist is crucial to ensure proper function and achieve the desired outcome.
