Pathologists examine the excised tissue to determine its nature, such as whether it is benign or malignant. If the lesion is cancerous, an eksizyoninäyte aims to remove all of the tumor. The removed tissue is sent to a laboratory where it is processed and analyzed under a microscope. This analysis helps determine the type of cell, its grade, and whether the margins of the excised tissue are clear of disease. Clear margins are crucial in cancer treatment, indicating that all cancerous cells have likely been removed.

This procedure is commonly used for skin lesions like moles, skin tags, or suspected skin cancers, as well as for lumps or masses found in other parts of the body. It provides a definitive diagnosis and, in many cases, the treatment itself if the lesion is completely removed.
