Terrestrial ecosystems include forests, grasslands, deserts, and tundra. Forests are characterized by dense tree cover and high biodiversity, varying greatly from tropical rainforests to temperate deciduous forests and boreal forests. Grasslands, such as savannas and prairies, are dominated by grasses and support large herbivore populations. Deserts are arid regions with sparse vegetation adapted to extreme dryness. Tundra environments, found in cold regions, are characterized by permafrost and low-growing vegetation like mosses and lichens.

Aquatic ecosystems are divided into freshwater and marine environments. Freshwater ecosystems include rivers, lakes, ponds, and wetlands. Rivers and streams are flowing water systems, while lakes and ponds are still bodies of water. Wetlands are areas saturated with water, supporting unique plant and animal communities. Marine ecosystems encompass oceans, coral reefs, estuaries, and mangrove forests. Oceans are the largest aquatic ecosystems, hosting diverse life forms from plankton to whales. Coral reefs are biologically rich underwater structures formed by coral polyps. Estuaries are transition zones where freshwater rivers meet saltwater oceans, creating brackish water habitats. Mangrove forests are coastal ecosystems found in tropical and subtropical regions, adapted to saline conditions. The boundaries between ecosystem types can sometimes be gradual, forming ecotones where characteristics of both systems overlap. Understanding these types is crucial for conservation efforts and managing natural resources.
