Ekologie is the scientific study of the interactions between organisms and their physical environment, including the distribution and abundance of living things, the flow of energy through ecosystems, and the cycling of nutrients. It aims to understand how organisms adapt to their surroundings and how communities and ecosystems respond to change.

Ecology operates at multiple levels, from individuals and populations to communities, ecosystems, and landscapes. It includes subfields such as population ecology, community ecology, ecosystem ecology, landscape ecology, behavioral ecology, and physiological ecology. Core concepts include niches, trophic interactions, food webs, competition, cooperation, succession, and resilience. Key processes include energy transfer through food chains and nutrient cycling that sustains ecosystems.

The field has its origins in natural history and was formalized in the 19th century. The term ecology was coined by the German biologist Ernst Haeckel in the 1860s. In the 20th century ecology expanded with the development of ecosystem theory, biosphere science, and quantitative methods, leading to more integrative approaches that link biology with geography, geology, and climatology.

Researchers employ a range of methods, from field observations and controlled experiments to mathematical modeling, statistics, and advanced data tools such as GIS and remote sensing. Measurements often focus on species distributions, population dynamics, biomass, primary production, respiration, and ecosystem services.

Ecology informs conservation, natural resource management, restoration ecology, and environmental policy. It provides a scientific basis for understanding biodiversity, climate change impacts, and sustainable interactions between humans and the natural world.
