Egyenirányítást, commonly translated as rectification, is the process of converting alternating current (AC) into direct current (DC). This is a fundamental process in electronics, as most electronic devices require DC power to operate, while power is often generated and transmitted as AC.

The core component of an equenirányítás circuit is a diode, a semiconductor device that allows current to flow in only one direction. In its simplest form, a half-wave equenirányítás circuit uses a single diode to block half of the AC waveform, allowing only the positive or negative half-cycles to pass through. This results in a pulsating DC output, which still varies significantly.

A more efficient and common method is full-wave equenirányítás. This can be achieved using a center-tapped transformer and two diodes, or more commonly, with a bridge rectifier circuit using four diodes. A bridge rectifier takes both the positive and negative halves of the AC waveform and inverts the negative half, effectively doubling the frequency of the pulsations and resulting in a smoother DC output than half-wave rectification.

While the output of an equenirányítás circuit is DC, it is typically not a perfectly smooth, constant voltage. It still contains ripple, which is a residual AC component. To further smooth the DC output, capacitors are often used in conjunction with the rectifier circuit. These capacitors store charge when the voltage is high and release it when the voltage drops, effectively filling in the gaps and reducing the ripple. For applications requiring very stable DC voltage, voltage regulators are also employed.
