Eflorescenssi is a geological term used to describe the process by which soluble salts accumulate on the surface of porous materials, such as rocks, soil, and building materials. This phenomenon is often observed in arid and semi-arid climates where evaporation rates are high. As water within the material evaporates, it leaves behind dissolved salts. These salts are then transported to the surface through capillary action. Upon reaching the surface, the water continues to evaporate, causing the salts to crystallize and form visible efflorescent deposits.

The appearance of efflorescence can vary depending on the type of salt and the substrate. It commonly presents as a white, powdery crust, but can also appear as crystalline needles, filaments, or encrustations. Common salts responsible for efflorescence include sulfates, nitrates, and carbonates of sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium.
