Eestkostetu is a traditional communal practice of mutual guardianship and resource sharing among the fictional coastal communities of the Eestkosta archipelago. It functions as both a social safety net and a ceremonial framework that organizes care for children, the elderly, and travelers, while also reinforcing local identity and resilience against natural hazards. The term combines words from the region’s constructed language, with eestan meaning east and kostetu meaning to shelter or protect; the phrase is commonly interpreted as “east guard” or “east shelter.”

Origins are traced to early seafaring communities in the archipelago, where seasonal gatherings coordinated provisioning and defense against storms. Over centuries, the practice formalized into a yearly cycle, codified by local assemblies and adapted to changing economic conditions. Traditionally, eestkostetu emphasized reciprocal obligation, ensuring that households alternated roles in provisioning, shelter, and protection.

Practices include seasonal feasts, the sharing of household supplies, collective maintenance of boats and shelters, and a central rite known as the Lantern Circuit, in which lanterns are passed from home to home to symbolize shared protection. Elders lead ritual storytelling and teach survival skills, while younger members contribute through crafts and service. Participation is inclusive, with explicit efforts to involve women, men, and non-binary participants.

Regional variants exist on the islands of Ail, Bjor, and Kest, differing in songs, masks, and the exact sequence of ceremonies, but all centers on reciprocity and communal responsibility. Today eestkostetu is described in ethnographic fiction and is used in world-building contexts. Within its fictional setting, scholars view it as an example of mutual aid embedded in ritual practice, illustrating how communities organize care and risk in the absence of formal social institutions.
