European Economic Area. The European Economic Area (EEA) is an agreement that extends the European Union's internal market to three European Free Trade Association (EFTA) states: Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway. In force since 1994, the EEA allows these states to participate in the four freedoms of the EU internal market—goods, services, capital, and people—while preserving their own political autonomy and monetary policies. They align broadly with EU internal market rules but do not participate in EU decision‑making, the euro, or EU policies on agriculture or fisheries.
