Ecoterrorist is a term used in media, law enforcement, and some academic contexts to describe individuals or groups who, in pursuit of environmental or animal-rights goals, commit or advocate violent or property-damaging acts in the name of a cause. The label is controversial and not universally accepted; some scholars and activists reject it as a pejorative or overly broad category, while others use it to distinguish illegal violence from nonviolent advocacy.

Historically, acts attributed to ecoterrorism have been associated with groups such as the Earth Liberation Front and the Animal Liberation Front, which have claimed responsibility for or been linked to arson, vandalism, and sabotage aimed at corporations, laboratories, or other facilities perceived as harming ecosystems. Proponents argue these actions are a form of political violence aimed at drawing attention to environmental harm; critics say such acts undermine legitimate environmental activism and endanger people.

In legal terms, acts described as ecoterrorism are often prosecuted as terrorism, arson, burglary, conspiracy, or property crimes, depending on jurisdiction and circumstances. At the same time, peaceful civil disobedience and nonviolent environmental advocacy are generally protected by freedom of expression in many countries, though they may face legal penalties for certain actions.

The term remains debated in academic and public discourse, with some using it to discuss wider patterns of eco-extremism, while others distinguish between lawful advocacy, nonviolent direct action, and violent or criminal acts.
