Détournant is the present participle of the French verb détourner, meaning “diverting” or “hijacking.” In cultural theory, the term is closely associated with détournement, a method of repurposing existing artistic or cultural elements to create a new work that subverts or critiques its original meaning.

The concept originated with the Lettrists and was developed by the Situationist International in the 1950s and 1960s, notably by Guy Debord. Détournant aims to turn expressions of the dominant culture—such as advertisements, films, or official art—against themselves by recontextualizing them in ways that reveal hidden assumptions or contradictions. The goal is not merely to imitate or parody, but to undermine the ideological function of the source material and to stimulate critical reflection in the spectator.

It remains a central idea in culture jamming and postwar avant-garde discourse, illustrating how readily available media can be redirected to challenge prevailing narratives and encourage critical examination of everyday media environments.
