Dyshidrosis is a type of eczema, also known as pompholyx, characterized by the sudden onset of small blisters on the palms of the hands, soles of the feet, and sides of the fingers and toes. These blisters are typically itchy and can be fluid-filled or solid. The rash often appears in clusters and may be accompanied by redness and scaling.

The exact cause of dyshidrosis is not fully understood, but it is believed to be triggered by various factors. Common triggers include stress, allergies, exposure to certain metals like nickel and cobalt, and contact with irritants such as soaps or detergents. In some cases, dyshidrosis may be associated with other medical conditions like fungal infections or hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating).

Diagnosis is usually made based on the characteristic appearance of the rash and its location. A dermatologist may perform patch testing to identify potential allergic triggers.

Treatment aims to relieve symptoms and prevent recurrence. This often involves topical corticosteroids to reduce inflammation and itching. Antihistamines may be prescribed to manage severe itching. For more severe or persistent cases, oral corticosteroids or other immunosuppressive medications might be considered. Keeping the affected skin moisturized and avoiding known triggers are also important management strategies. Dyshidrosis can be a chronic condition for some individuals, with periods of remission and flare-ups.
