dysgranular
Dysgranular is an adjective used in neurology and neuropathology to describe abnormalities of the granular layer of the cerebral neocortex, most often layer IV. The term combines the prefix dys- (abnormal) with granular, referring to the granule-containing neurons that populate this cortical layer in many sensory areas. In histological specimens, a dysgranular cortex shows irregularities in the density, distribution, or organization of neurons within layer IV, which can appear as thinning, thickening, or disarray of the granule/stellate cell population.
The concept is mainly descriptive and is encountered in discussions of cortical development and pathology. Dysgranular
In modern practice, dysgranular is typically used as a descriptive term rather than a stand-alone diagnosis.
