Dynamiikkarajaus, often translated as dynamic range compression or simply compression, is an audio signal processing technique used to reduce the dynamic range of an audio signal. Dynamic range refers to the difference between the loudest and quietest parts of a sound. Compression works by attenuating (reducing) the level of an audio signal when it exceeds a certain threshold.

The primary purpose of dynamic range compression is to make a sound source, such as a voice or musical instrument, sound more consistent in volume. This can be useful in various applications. For instance, in music production, compression can help vocals sit better in a mix, making them clearer and more present. It can also add sustain to instruments like guitars or make drums sound punchier. In broadcasting, compression is used to ensure that audio levels remain within acceptable limits for transmission, preventing sudden loud bursts and making quieter passages audible.

Key parameters that define a compressor's behavior include the threshold, which sets the level above which compression begins; the ratio, which determines how much the signal is reduced once it exceeds the threshold; the attack time, which controls how quickly the compressor reacts to a signal crossing the threshold; and the release time, which dictates how long it takes for the compressor to stop reducing the signal after it falls below the threshold. A makeup gain control is often included to boost the overall level of the signal after compression, as the reduction in peak levels can lower the perceived loudness.
