Dykkermasken, often referred to as a diving mask, is an essential piece of equipment for underwater exploration. Its primary function is to create an air space in front of the diver's eyes, allowing them to see clearly underwater. Without a mask, the refractive index of water would cause the diver's eyes to focus on their own face, rendering vision blurry and indistinct.

The basic design of a dykkermasken consists of a lens or lenses made of tempered glass or, more commonly, plastic, set into a frame. This frame is then attached to a skirt, typically made of silicone or rubber. The skirt forms a watertight seal against the diver's face, preventing water from entering the air space. A strap, usually adjustable, goes around the back of the head to hold the mask securely in place.

Different types of dykkermasker exist, catering to various needs. Some masks feature a single lens, while others have two separate lenses for each eye, which can offer a wider field of vision. Masks with a low internal volume are preferred by some divers as they are easier to clear of water and require less air to equalize pressure. Freedivers often opt for these low-volume masks. Scuba divers may choose masks with a larger field of view or those designed to accommodate corrective lenses. Proper fitting is crucial to ensure a comfortable and effective seal, preventing leaks during a dive.
