A dykkercomputer, or dive computer, is an electronic device used by scuba divers to monitor and record information about their dive. It acts as a real-time underwater assistant, calculating and displaying critical data that helps divers manage their safety and plan their dives.

The primary function of a dykkercomputer is to track the diver's depth and time spent at that depth. Based on this information and pre-programmed dive tables or algorithms, it calculates the diver's nitrogen absorption and saturation levels. This allows the dykkercomputer to provide real-time "no-decompression limit" (NDL) information, indicating how much longer the diver can stay at their current depth without needing to perform mandatory decompression stops on ascent.

Beyond NDL, most dykkercomputers also display other vital parameters such as current depth, maximum depth reached during the dive, dive time, water temperature, and ascent rate. Many advanced models also include features like surface interval timers, dive planning modes, oxygen percentage settings for enriched air nitrox, and even battery life indicators. Some can also log dive profiles, allowing divers to review their past dives on a computer.

The use of a dykkercomputer has significantly enhanced scuba diving safety by providing divers with more precise and immediate information than traditional dive tables, especially for repetitive dives or dives with varying depths. It helps divers stay within safe operating limits and reduces the risk of decompression sickness.
