A dust jacket, also known as a dust wrapper, is a detachable paper cover surrounding a hardcover book. It protects the book from dust, moisture, and handling, and provides marketing information and a summary to potential readers. The jacket is typically made of glossy or matte paper with artwork and typography.

A dust jacket is printed with three main panels—front cover, spine, back cover—and two inner flaps that fold inside the front and back covers. The front often shows the title, author, and illustration; the back may carry a synopsis, quotes, and bibliographic details; the inner flaps often include author biography or publisher blurbs. In modern editions the back includes the ISBN, price, and barcode.

History and usage: Dust jackets originated in the 19th century in Britain and became widespread in the early 20th century with mass-produced hardcovers and illustrated designs. They evolved from simple wrappers to full-color artwork that became a key part of a book’s branding. While less common on many paperback editions, dust jackets remain standard for many hardbacks and special editions.

Preservation and collecting: Many collectors prize jackets for artwork and condition. Damage includes tears, creases, and loss of flaps; libraries often remove jackets to protect the book. Care involves keeping away from direct sunlight and moisture; jackets may be stored in protective sleeves.
