Duplextulostus, also known as double-sided printing or duplexing, refers to the process of printing on both sides of a piece of paper. This can be achieved manually, where the user flips the paper over to print the second side, or automatically, where the printer has built-in hardware to perform the paper flipping internally. Automatic duplexing is a common feature in modern printers, especially those designed for office use or high-volume printing.

The primary advantage of duplextulostus is the reduction in paper consumption. By printing on both sides, the amount of paper needed for documents is effectively halved, leading to cost savings and environmental benefits. This is particularly useful for printing reports, handouts, manuals, and any other document where a significant number of pages are involved.

There are two main types of automatic duplexing: flip-over and flip-out. Flip-over duplexing is typically found in less expensive printers. In this method, the paper is fed back into the printer after the first side is printed and then flipped over. Flip-out duplexing, more common in higher-end models, involves a mechanism that rotates the paper within the printer to print the second side without it fully exiting the machine.

While offering benefits, duplex printing can sometimes be slower than single-sided printing, as the printer needs to manage the paper repositioning. However, advancements in printer technology are continually improving the speed and efficiency of this feature.
