A dumpventil (dump valve) is a valve designed to relieve pressure in a pressurized system by venting gas or liquid to a safe location or back into the process. It is used in various industries, including automotive engineering, hydraulics, and industrial process control.

In turbocharged engines, the dumpventil is also called a blow-off valve or bypass valve. It opens when the throttle is released to vent the boost pressure in the intake tract, preventing compressor surge and reducing mechanical stress on the turbocharger. There are two main designs: atmospheric dump vents, which vent the air to the environment and create a characteristic “whoosh” noise, and recirculating or bypass valves, which route the air back into the intake and are quieter and often more compliant with emissions regulations.

Operation: a spring-loaded mechanism is held closed by boost pressure; when throttle closes, a pressure differential opens the valve; after the air is vented, the valve re-closes as pressure equalizes. Materials are typically metal or high-strength polymers, with seals to withstand boost pressures.

Other applications: in hydraulic or pneumatic systems, a dump valve can act as a relief valve that dumps fluid into a reservoir or atmosphere when pressure exceeds a set limit, protecting components and maintaining safe operation.

Regulation and maintenance: atmospheric dump valves may be subject to noise and emissions regulations in some jurisdictions; recirculating variants are common on street cars. Regular inspection of seals, housings and hoses is recommended to prevent leaks and boost instability.
