A dual-clutch transmission, often abbreviated as DCT or sometimes referred to by its Swedish name dualclutchlåda, is a type of automatic transmission that uses two separate clutches for odd and even gear sets. This design allows for a seamless and very rapid gear change. When one clutch is engaged with a particular gear, the next gear is pre-selected on the other clutch. As the driver accelerates or decelerates, the transmission can shift to the next gear almost instantaneously by disengaging one clutch and engaging the other. This process is significantly faster than traditional automatic transmissions or manual transmissions.

DCTs can be thought of as two manual transmissions working in parallel. One clutch controls the odd-numbered gears (1, 3, 5, etc.) and the other controls the even-numbered gears (2, 4, 6, etc.) and reverse. The computer controlling the transmission anticipates the next gear shift and has it ready on the inactive clutch. When the time is right, the clutches swap their engagement. This leads to a smooth transfer of power and minimal interruption to acceleration, often resulting in improved fuel efficiency and performance compared to other automatic transmission types. They are commonly found in performance-oriented vehicles and increasingly in mainstream passenger cars.
