Applications span consumer electronics, packaging, automotive components, medical devices, and industrial equipment. By applying drops from defined orientations and heights, engineers can identify design weaknesses, assess packaging performance, and estimate the likelihood of functional failure after impact. Results guide engineering changes, material selection, and quality control.

Procedure typically involves a drop apparatus that releases a specimen from a prescribed height onto a chosen surface, such as concrete, wood, or a standardized platform. The sample may be tested in different orientations (flat, edge, or corner) to simulate various impact scenarios. After each drop, the specimen is inspected for visible damage and tested for any required functions. In some configurations, multiple drops are performed with re-inspection after each exposure.
