The concept covers polishing drum shells of various finishes (wood, metal, acrylic) as well as metal components such as hoops, lugs, rims, and hardware.

In practice, drumpolijst involves cleaning the surface, selecting an appropriate polish based on the material, and applying it with a microfiber cloth, a soft pad, or a polishing wheel. The goal is to remove oxidation, fingerprints, and minor scratches while preserving the original finish. For lacquered or wrapped shells, gentle, non-abrasive products are preferred to avoid removing the protective coating. Metal parts may require dedicated metal polishes, followed by buffing to a protective shine. After polishing, components are often reassembled and wiped to remove any residue.

Common materials include non-abrasive or metal polishes suitable for the specific surface, waxes or silicone-free sealants for protection, microfiber cloths, and soft pads. It is important to test any product on a small, inconspicuous area first and to avoid silicone-containing products if future refinishing or adhesive work is planned, as residues can interfere with coatings or heads.
