Drooly refers to the excessive flow of saliva from the mouth. This condition, also known as ptyalism or sialorrhea, can occur in both humans and animals and may have various underlying causes. In infants, drooling is a normal developmental stage as their salivary glands mature and they are still learning to swallow effectively. This typically subsides as they gain better control.

For adults and older children, drooling can be a symptom of several medical conditions. Neurological disorders such as Parkinson's disease, stroke, or cerebral palsy can affect muscle control in the face and throat, leading to difficulty swallowing and retaining saliva. Infections in the mouth, throat, or salivary glands can also increase saliva production or cause discomfort that hinders swallowing. Certain medications, particularly those that affect neurotransmitters, can also have drooling as a side effect. Gastrointestinal issues, like acid reflux, may sometimes be associated with increased salivation.

Diagnosis of drooly often involves a physical examination, a review of medical history, and potentially further tests to identify the root cause. Treatment strategies vary depending on the underlying reason and may include behavioral therapies to improve swallowing techniques, medications to reduce saliva production, or in some cases, surgical interventions.
