Driedgourd refers to the dried fruit of certain gourds in the Cucurbitaceae family, most commonly the bottle gourd (Lagenaria siceraria) and related calabash varieties. When mature, the fruit is harvested, the interior pulp is removed, and the hollow shell is dried until hard. The resulting shell is lightweight yet sturdy, and can be used as a vessel, container, or craft material.

Uses of dried gourds vary by culture and period. They are fashioned into bowls, ladles, cups, and water containers, and can be hollowed further for musical instruments, rattles, masks, or decorative objects. The calabash gourd, in particular, has a long history of use in Africa, the Caribbean, parts of Asia, and the Americas. Beyond practical containers, dried gourds appear in various artisanal practices, including carving, painting, and inlay work, as well as in traditional musical traditions.

Production and care: The fruit is allowed to mature on the vine, then cleaned and the pulp removed. The shell is dried through sun or controlled heat, air-dried, and sometimes treated with wax, oil, or lacquer to improve durability. Thorough drying is essential to prevent mold and cracking; shells should be fully dry before storage. Dried gourds are generally not edible and should be kept in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight.
