Key components include surface drainage (ditches and channels) to collect runoff; subsurface drainage (perforated pipes with gravel backfill) to lower the water table; and outlet structures, such as catch basins and pumps. Roof drainage uses gutters and downspouts to divert rainwater away from buildings. Filtration and sediment control are common add-ons.

Design relies on soil type, topography, rainfall, and groundwater conditions, as well as land use and environmental goals. In agriculture, drainage improves crop growth; in cities it reduces flood risk and protects roads and buildings. Designers follow standards for drain spacing, pipe size, backfill materials, and treatment of runoff to protect water quality.

Common types include agricultural tile drainage, urban stormwater networks, and roof drainage. Subsurface drainage is typical in poorly drained soils; surface drainage helps with uneven terrain. In some systems, pumping stations and retention basins are used to manage peak flows.

Maintenance involves regular inspection, cleaning of outlets, vegetation control, and repair of damaged pipes. System performance depends on proper grading and installation. Regulations and standards vary by country and region, governing design methods, materials, and environmental protections.
