Usage in Polish. In mathematical and formal contexts, phrases like dowolny element, dowolny punkt, or dowolny parametr are common, meaning “an arbitrary element/point/parameter.” In everyday language, dowolnie (arbitrarily) and dowolność (arbitrariness, freedom of choice) are used to describe actions or decisions not bound to a particular rule. The term can be contrasted with losowy (random), where losowo implies probabilistic or determined by chance rather than by a free choice.
