Downtilt refers to the downward angle of an antenna relative to the horizontal plane. It is a crucial parameter in antenna deployment, particularly for wireless communication systems like cellular networks and satellite dishes. The purpose of downtilt is to control the direction and coverage area of the radio signal.

In cellular base stations, antenna downtilt is adjusted to optimize signal strength at the cell edge while minimizing interference within the cell. A lower downtilt angle directs the signal further horizontally, increasing the cell's range. Conversely, a higher downtilt angle focuses the signal more vertically, reducing the coverage area but potentially improving signal quality for users closer to the tower. Electrical downtilt, controlled by adjusting the phase of antenna elements, and mechanical downtilt, achieved by physically tilting the antenna mount, are the two primary methods of achieving the desired angle.

For satellite dishes, downtilt is used to align the dish with the geostationary orbit of the satellite. The exact downtilt angle depends on the geographical location of the dish relative to the satellite's position in the sky. Proper downtilt is essential for establishing and maintaining a strong, reliable connection. Incorrect downtilt can lead to weak signals, dropped connections, or complete loss of signal.
