In the narratives where it appears, dourmutur is native to limestone cave networks of the imagined continent of Xyrion, where it occupies a mid-level ecological niche and is often used to illustrate adaptations to darkness.

Morphology and physiology: Adults range from about 1.5 to 2.5 centimeters in length. The body is dark and rugged, with a pitted exoskeleton and shortened elytra that leave the hind wings vestigial. Forelegs are adapted for digging, and the mandibles are strong enough to capture small invertebrates.
