The double cardan joint, often shortened to double cardan or CV (constant velocity) joint, is a type of universal joint that allows for the transmission of rotational power between two shafts that are not perfectly aligned. Unlike a standard single cardan joint, which experiences fluctuating rotational speeds when operating at an angle, the double cardan joint is designed to provide a constant velocity output.

This constant velocity is achieved through the use of two cardan joints connected by an intermediate shaft. The key to its operation is the precise arrangement and orientation of these components. Typically, the two yoke pairs within the double cardan joint are phased 90 degrees relative to each other. An oscillating yoke, often called a ball or spider, is situated between the two single cardan joints. This oscillating yoke compensates for the speed variations inherent in each individual cardan joint, resulting in a smooth, consistent rotational output from the driven shaft.

Double cardan joints are commonly found in applications where significant angular misalignment is expected and a smooth power transfer is crucial. Examples include automotive driveshafts, especially in front-wheel drive vehicles and independent rear suspension systems, as well as in industrial machinery and agricultural equipment. Their ability to handle higher operating angles and deliver constant velocity makes them a valuable component in many mechanical systems.
