Dopalacze, often translated as "legal highs" or "designer drugs," is a term used in Poland and some other Central European countries to refer to a wide variety of psychoactive substances that are synthesized to mimic the effects of illegal drugs. These substances are often designed to circumvent existing drug laws by having a slightly altered chemical structure from controlled substances, thus remaining legal at the time of their sale.

The composition of dopalacze is highly variable and frequently changes as new substances are developed and old ones are banned. They can include synthetic cannabinoids, cathinones, piperazines, and other novel psychoactive substances (NPS). These are often sold in small packets, sometimes labeled as plant food, bath salts, or research chemicals, to avoid detection.

The use of dopalacze carries significant health risks. Because their chemical makeup is often unknown and unregulated, users are exposed to unpredictable and potentially dangerous effects. These can range from mild intoxication, anxiety, and paranoia to severe psychosis, hallucinations, heart problems, seizures, organ damage, and even death. The long-term effects of many dopalacze are largely unknown.

Due to the inherent dangers and the difficulties in controlling their production and distribution, dopalacze have been a significant public health concern in Poland and neighboring countries. Governments have implemented measures to ban individual substances as they are identified, but the constant emergence of new compounds makes this a challenging ongoing battle. Awareness campaigns and educational efforts are also in place to inform the public about the risks associated with these substances.
