Typical activities include planning routes on accessible dolostone outcrops, taking high-resolution photographs, sketches, and field notes, and compiling simple stratigraphic logs. Gear commonly includes sturdy footwear, a helmet, a headlamp, a field notebook, a camera, a compass or GPS device, measuring tools, and, where permitted, small labeled rock samples kept in bags. Dolostooners follow established permissions, treaties, or park rules to minimize impact.

Because dolostone terrain often coincides with fragile karst systems and unstable rock faces, safety and ethics are central. Participants avoid disturbing formations, respect prohibitions on sample removal from protected sites, and leave no trace of their visit.
