Distinct from fictional cinema, dokumentare aim to inform, illuminate, or persuade through evidence, testimony, and observation.

The documentary tradition emerged in the early 20th century. Nanook of the North (1922) is often cited as an early influential work, though its realism is debated. The term documentary was popularized by British filmmaker John Grierson in the 1920s to describe this growing mode of non-fiction filmmaking. Since then, genres and styles have evolved with changes in technology and distribution, shaping how audiences encounter real events and people on screen.

Scholars classify dokumentare by several stylistic approaches. Expository documentaries use narration and didactic framing to explain a topic; observational or cinéma vérité forms aim to minimize mediation and follow subjects in real time; participatory documentaries foreground the filmmaker’s involvement; and reflexive works examine the documentary process itself and its methods.

Production typically combines interviews, on-location shooting, archival material, and sometimes reenactments. Ethical considerations include obtaining informed consent, accurately representing subjects, avoiding misleading manipulation, and respecting copyright and the rights of people and communities depicted.

In contemporary media, dokumentare influence journalism, education, and public discourse, with streaming platforms broadening access and reach. Critical discussions address issues such as bias, representation, authenticity, and commercial pressures.
