djelatnost

Djelatnost is a term used in Croatian, and in related South Slavic languages as delatnost in Serbian and Bosnian, to describe the activity or line of business of an organization. It denotes the scope of operations an entity conducts and is commonly used in legal, economic, and statistical contexts. The word derives from the verb djelovati (to act), with the noun form indicating activity, function, or occupation.

In modern practice, djelatnost is associated with classification codes that group economic activities. In Croatia and many European contexts, classifications such as NKD or NACE are used to organize activities into categories. A company typically identifies its glavna djelatnost (main activity) and prateće ili dodatne djelatnosti (secondary or ancillary activities). The chosen djelatnost influences regulatory requirements, taxation, reporting obligations, and eligibility for certain programs or permits.

The concept is central to business planning and public administration. For a company, clearly defining its djelatnost helps in product strategy, market focus, and operations. For statisticians and policymakers, it enables measurement of economic activity and comparison across sectors.
