Diversitetit is a Finnish-language term used to describe the state or character of variety within a system. It is used broadly to refer to the presence of different elements—such as species, genes, cultures, languages, identities, or ideas—and to how these elements interact. The concept emphasizes both the number of distinct elements and how evenly they are distributed, as well as the quality of relationships that emerge from their coexistence.

In ecology, diversitetit often relates to biodiversity, including species richness, genetic diversity, and functional diversity, all of which affect ecosystem functioning and resilience. In cultural and social contexts, it refers to the representation of diverse groups and perspectives in communities, institutions, workplaces, and public life.

Measuring diversitetit involves different approaches. Biodiversity indices such as the Shannon or Simpson index quantify variety and evenness in species communities, while in social settings metrics may include demographic representation, participation rates, and indicators of inclusion or sense of belonging.

Policy and practice draw on diversitetit to promote conservation, equitable development, and innovation. Benefits attributed to higher diversity include greater resilience, creativity, and problem-solving capacity. Critics warn that diversity alone does not guarantee positive outcomes and that superficial or symbolic inclusion can be counterproductive unless paired with meaningful participation, equity, and supportive structures.
