Dithertekniikoiden, or dithering techniques, are methods used to simulate colors or shades that are not available in a limited color palette. This is commonly employed in digital imaging and graphics to reduce the visual artifacts caused by quantization, such as banding or posterization. Dithering works by strategically arranging pixels of available colors to create the illusion of intermediate shades.

One fundamental dithertekniikka is ordered dithering, also known as pattern dithering. In this method, a predefined dither matrix or pattern is used. The intensity of the original color is compared to a threshold value determined by the corresponding element in the dither matrix. If the original color's intensity is greater than the threshold, the pixel is rendered in a darker available color; otherwise, it's rendered in a lighter one. This creates repeating patterns that can be noticeable at close inspection but effectively approximate a wider range of colors.

Another important dithertekniikka is error diffusion. Unlike ordered dithering, error diffusion distributes the quantization error from a single pixel to its neighboring pixels. Algorithms like Floyd-Steinberg dithering are well-known examples. The error is calculated as the difference between the original pixel value and its quantized value. This error is then spread across neighboring pixels, usually in a specific pattern, influencing their subsequent quantization. Error diffusion tends to produce more visually pleasing, less patterned results than ordered dithering, as the errors are diffused more randomly.

Both ordered and error diffusion dithering are crucial for applications with limited color depth, such as older displays, GIF images, or certain printing processes, allowing for a more realistic and nuanced representation of images.
