diszkosz

Diszkosz is the Hungarian term for the discus, a circular throwing implement used in the track and field event of discus throw, as well as the sport itself. The word can refer to the equipment or to the competition in which it is thrown.

In international competition, the men's discus weighs 2 kilograms and the women's weighs 1 kilogram. The discus has a diameter of about 22 centimeters. It consists of a core made of wood or plastic with a rim of metal or hard plastic, finished for a smooth surface. A grip area is provided at the center for handling during throws.

A discus throw is performed from a raised throwing circle and must land within a marked sector. The throw is valid if the discus lands in the sector and the thrower exits the circle properly after the release. Distance is measured from the center of the throwing circle to the point where the discus first touches the ground.

History and records: The discus is one of the oldest athletic events, appearing in ancient Greece as part of the pentathlon. In the modern era, it has been contested at the Olympic Games since 1896 for men, with women’s competition added in 1928. The current world records are approximately 74.08 meters for men (set by Jürgen Schult in 1986) and 76.80 meters for women (set by Gabriele Reinsch in 1988).

Techniques and training emphasize form, balance, and rotational speed to maximize release distance. Modern throwing relies predominantly on the rotational (spin) technique, with emphasis on grip, footwork, and precision in the release.
