A discectomy is a surgical procedure to remove a herniated or damaged portion of a disc in the spine. This condition, often referred to as a slipped disc, occurs when the soft inner material of a spinal disc protrudes through its outer layer, potentially pressing on nearby nerves. Symptoms can include pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness that radiates down an arm or leg.

The goal of a discectomy is to relieve pressure on the affected nerve and alleviate these symptoms. Endoscopic discectomy employs a small camera and specialized instruments inserted through a tiny incision.

The specific approach chosen depends on factors such as the location and size of the herniation, the patient's overall health, and the surgeon's preference. Recovery time varies depending on the technique used and individual healing rates, but most patients can expect a period of rest followed by physical therapy to regain strength and mobility. While discectomy is generally effective in relieving nerve compression, it does not address underlying degenerative changes in the spine.
