Geographically, Direste sits at roughly 420 meters above sea level on the eastern flank of the Montara ridge, near the Luma River. The landscape combines meadow, mixed forest, and terraced slopes, with a cool, temperate climate and distinct seasonal changes.

Historically, the settlement is traced to the 12th century, growing around a feudal manor and a central market square. It expanded in the 19th century with a modest railway connection and a wool workshop, and was formally constituted as a commune in the early 20th century.

The economy of Direste relies on dairy farming, timber, and artisanal crafts, supplemented by small-scale tourism focused on hiking, historical buildings, and rural hospitality. Cultural life centers on an annual harvest festival, a weekly market, and the preservation of a local dialect with archaisms.
