Dinitrogénoxid, also known as nitrous oxide and chemically represented as N2O, is a colorless, non-flammable gas with a mildly sweet odor. It is used medically as an anesthetic and analgesic, and it is also employed as a propellant in food products and in various industrial applications. In laboratory and industrial settings it can act as an oxidizer in chemical reactions and processes.

In terms of properties, nitrous oxide is stable at room temperature and under normal pressures, but its behavior changes under different conditions, including reduced pressure or low temperatures where it can liquefy. It is not a strongly reactive gas, yet it participates in oxidation-reduction chemistry and can contribute to atmospheric chemistry when released.

Natural occurrence and production: nitrous oxide is produced both anthropogenically and naturally. In nature, it arises from microbial processes in soils and oceans, as well as from manure management and other biological sources. Industrially, it is produced primarily by the thermal decomposition of ammonium nitrate and is then purified for use in medicine, food, or manufacturing.

Applications: medically it is used for anesthesia and analgesia, often in dental procedures, sometimes as part of a mixed anesthetic gas. In the food industry it is used as a propellant and whipping agent in dairy products and foams. It also serves as an oxidizer in rocket propulsion and, in automotive contexts, is used in some performance-enhancing techniques for internal combustion engines.

Safety and environment: inhalation of concentrated nitrous oxide can displace oxygen and suffocate; prolonged exposure can affect vitamin B12 metabolism and nervous system function. Environmentally, N2O is a greenhouse gas with a significant global warming potential and a long atmospheric lifetime. It is a minor ozone-depleting substance through its NOx-related chemistry.
