Dimensionwords are a category of lexical items used to express the dimensional properties of objects and events. Dimensionwords may appear as adjectives, nouns indicating measurement, or numerals combined with classifiers, depending on the language.

Linguistic realization of dimensionwords varies across languages. In English, dimension meaning is typically conveyed by adjectives and by measurement phrases such as a three-meter-long rope. In languages with classifiers, dimension information is often expressed via numerals and classifiers that attach to the noun (for example, a phrase meaning “three meters tall”). Some languages have dedicated dimension words that function as a distinct semantic subcategory within the lexicon, while others rely on compounding or descriptive terms to convey similar information.

Dimensionwords serve several functions in discourse. They facilitate precise description, enable comparisons, and support spatial reasoning and planning. They interact with numerals and classifiers to form measurement phrases, and they can be gradable (very long) or absolute (three meters).
