Digitaalipiirejä, or digital circuits in English, are electronic circuits that operate on discrete, digital signals. Unlike analog circuits that deal with continuous signals, digital circuits process information represented by two distinct states, typically high and low voltage levels, often referred to as 1s and 0s. These binary values form the basis of all digital information processing.

The fundamental building blocks of digital circuits are logic gates. Common logic gates include AND, OR, NOT, NAND, NOR, and XOR gates. Each logic gate performs a basic logical operation on its input signals to produce a single output signal. By combining these logic gates in various configurations, more complex digital circuits can be constructed.

These complex circuits are designed to perform specific functions, such as arithmetic operations, data storage, and control. Examples include combinational circuits like adders and multiplexers, which produce outputs solely based on current inputs, and sequential circuits like flip-flops and counters, which have memory and their outputs depend on both current and past inputs.

Digital circuits are the foundation of modern electronic devices. They are found in microprocessors, memory chips, calculators, computers, smartphones, and virtually all digital technologies. Their ability to process information reliably and their inherent resistance to noise make them superior for many applications compared to analog circuits. The design and analysis of digital circuits are key aspects of digital electronics and computer engineering.
