Diffúzió is a fundamental scientific process that describes the net movement of anything generally from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration. This movement is driven by the random motion of particles. Think of it as particles spreading out to occupy available space. This phenomenon is observed in gases, liquids, and even solids, although the rate of diffusion varies greatly depending on the state of matter and other factors.

In gases, molecules are in constant, rapid motion, colliding with each other and the walls of their container. This leads to rapid diffusion. For example, if you open a bottle of perfume, the scent molecules will quickly spread throughout the room. In liquids, molecules are less free to move but still possess kinetic energy, allowing for diffusion, albeit at a slower pace than in gases. A classic example is dropping a colored dye into a beaker of water; the color will gradually spread throughout the water. In solids, diffusion is much slower as atoms or molecules are held in fixed positions. However, at high temperatures, atoms can migrate through the solid lattice, a process crucial in metallurgy and semiconductor manufacturing.

The rate of diffusion is influenced by temperature, the size and mass of the diffusing particles, and the medium through which they are diffusing. Higher temperatures increase the kinetic energy of particles, thus increasing diffusion rates. Smaller, lighter particles generally diffuse faster than larger, heavier ones. The concentration gradient, the difference in concentration between two regions, also dictates the speed of diffusion; a steeper gradient leads to faster net movement. Diffusion is a passive process, meaning it does not require external energy input. It plays a vital role in many biological and chemical systems, including the transport of nutrients and waste in cells, and the mixing of substances in chemical reactions.
