Diffusionlike is an adjective used in physics, mathematics, and related fields to describe processes or models that resemble diffusion in how a quantity spreads through space over time. The term is intentionally broad and informal, covering linear and nonlinear diffusion, local and nonlocal interactions, as well as some anomalous spreading behaviors that do not strictly conform to classical diffusion equations.

In mathematical modelling, diffusionlike behavior is often represented by diffusionlike equations or operators. Classical diffusion uses ∂u/∂t = ∇·(D∇u). Nonlinear diffusion allows D to depend on u, while nonlocal diffusion employs integral operators such as ∂u/∂t = ∫ J(x−y)[u(y,t)−u(x,t)] dy. Fractional or Lévy diffusion provides another diffusionlike generalization with long-range steps.

Applications are diverse. In physics and chemistry, diffusionlike models describe heat conduction and mass transport; in ecology and epidemiology, they model the spread of populations or pathogens; in network science and information theory, they model the spread of ideas or influence. In image processing, diffusionlike smoothing helps remove noise while preserving structures.

Although diffusionlike processes share the spreading hallmark of classical diffusion, they are not limited to it. They may exhibit nonlinearities, anisotropy, or nonlocal interactions, and can display subdiffusive or superdiffusive scaling. The term signals resemblance to diffusion rather than a single canonical equation.
