Differential modules, also known as modules over a differential ring, are algebraic structures that generalize the notion of modules over a ring by incorporating differential operators. They are particularly useful in algebraic geometry, differential algebra, and mathematical physics.

A differential ring is a ring equipped with a set of commuting derivations. A derivation on a ring R is a map D: R → R satisfying the Leibniz rule: D(ab) = D(a)b + aD(b) for all a, b in R. If R has multiple derivations, they must commute with each other. A differential module over a differential ring R is a module M over R equipped with a set of endomorphisms, one for each derivation of R, such that these endomorphisms satisfy the same Leibniz rule as the derivations.

Differential modules can be thought of as modules with additional structure that allows for differentiation. This structure makes them suitable for studying differential equations, as the endomorphisms can represent differentiation in the module. In algebraic geometry, differential modules are used to study connections on vector bundles, which are geometric objects that can be locally described by differential modules.
