differenssi

Differenssi is a term used in mathematics and related disciplines to denote the concept of difference or change between quantities. In its simplest form, the differenssi between two values a and b is the result of subtracting one from the other, often written as a − b.

In the context of sequences and functions, differenssi commonly refers to the discrete change from one term to the next. The first differenssi of a sequence (a_n) is defined as Δa_n = a_{n+1} − a_n. Higher-order differenssit are obtained by applying the operator Δ again, for example the second differenssi Δ^2 a_n = Δ(a_{n+1} − a_n) = a_{n+2} − 2a_{n+1} + a_n. These differences help analyze monotonicity, acceleration, and other properties of sequences. For instance, if a_n = n^2, then Δa_n = 2n + 1 and Δ^2 a_n = 2, a constant.

Finite difference methods use differenssit to approximate derivatives and to perform numerical analysis when a function is known only at discrete points.
