Dieselroetfilters, also known as diesel particulate filters (DPFs), are emission control devices designed to reduce the amount of soot emitted by diesel engines. They function by trapping particulate matter, or soot, that is produced during the combustion process. This trapped soot is then periodically burned off in a process called regeneration.

There are two main types of DPFs: wall-flow filters and open-ended filters. Wall-flow filters are the most common and consist of a ceramic honeycomb structure with alternating channels plugged at one end, forcing exhaust gases to pass through the porous walls where soot is captured. Open-ended filters are less common and rely on a different mechanism to trap soot.

Regeneration can be passive or active. Passive regeneration occurs automatically when exhaust gas temperatures are high enough, typically during sustained driving at highway speeds. Active regeneration is initiated by the engine control unit when soot accumulation reaches a certain level, often by injecting a small amount of fuel into the exhaust to raise the temperature and burn off the soot.

DPFs are crucial for meeting modern emissions standards for diesel vehicles. However, they can sometimes become clogged if regeneration does not occur properly, leading to reduced engine performance and potential damage. Regular maintenance and ensuring the vehicle is driven in conditions that allow for regeneration are important for DPF longevity.
