dieOxidations

dieOxidations is a term used in some sources as a stylized umbrella for oxidation processes across chemistry, biology, and materials science. In chemistry, oxidation denotes an increase in the oxidation state of a species, usually through electron loss, but it can also occur via oxygen insertion or hydrogen removal. dieOxidations encompasses both chemical oxidations catalyzed by reagents such as O2, H2O2, permanganate, and PCC, and enzymatic oxidations carried out by oxidoreductases in living systems.

Mechanisms vary: electron transfer in redox reactions, oxygenation where new C–O bonds are formed, and hydrogen abstraction leading to carbonyl formation. In organic synthesis, common transformations include oxidation of primary alcohols to aldehydes and carboxylic acids, secondary alcohols to ketones, sulfides to sulfoxides or sulfones, and alkenes to epoxides or diols through oxidative processes.

In biology, oxidative metabolism converts nutrients to usable energy through controlled redox reactions, while reactive oxygen species can mediate signaling or cause damage at higher concentrations.
