Diacriticare is a verb used in linguistics and typography to describe the act of adding diacritical marks to letters in writing. The term derives from diacritic, signs added to letters to modify pronunciation, stress, tone, or meaning. In practice, diacritication covers accents, tildes, cedillas, umlauts, and other marks that distinguish otherwise identical characters or indicate vowel quality.

Diacritics appear in many languages and writing systems. Italian uses a small set of diacritics mainly on vowels to indicate stress or distinguish words (for example città, più). Other languages rely more extensively on diacritics: French é and è; Spanish á and í; Portuguese ã and õ; Vietnamese tones; Czech č, š, and ž; Romanian ă, î, and ț; Turkish ş and ğ. Diacritics are also common in transliteration and phonetic transcription.

From a computational perspective, diacritication poses challenges and opportunities. Texts without diacritics may require diacritization to restore pronunciation or disambiguate meaning, a common task in natural language processing for languages such as Arabic, Persian, or Vietnamese. In digital typography, diacritics are encoded in Unicode so that letters can be represented consistently; combining marks allow post-base diacritics. In indexing and search, diacritics affect sorting and matching; some systems ignore or normalize them for convenience.

Usage of diacriticare varies by language and context. Some orthographies rely heavily on diacritics for correct pronunciation and meaning, while others use them sparingly; editors may add diacritics for correctness, readability, or scholarly accuracy.
