Detonációk refer to a type of explosive decomposition that propagates through a material at supersonic speeds, creating a shock wave. This shock wave is the defining characteristic of a detonation and distinguishes it from deflagration, which is a slower, subsonic combustion process.

In a detonation, the rapid release of energy causes a sharp increase in pressure and temperature that outpaces the speed of sound in the material. This self-sustaining process requires specific conditions and a reactive medium.
